Ave 26 Taco Stand
One of the staples of LA street food is the Avenue 26 taco stand. It is a must visit. When you roam through downtown Los Angeles, you will also notice other street food vendors, each offering a more exciting and memorable meal than the meal you would be served at any given chain restaurant.
Aircraft Boneyard
Located at the edge of Edwards Air Force Base, the Aircraft Boneyard has long piqued public interest, although there is no direct access and people have been fined for attempts. Consider it an example of how some roadside attractions are not worth stopping as this is certainly not the area to test your boundaries when it comes to bordering military land.
Port of Los Angeles and the Palos Verdes Area
Sometime along the cliffs of Palos Verdes, you may spot the remains of a shipwreck and some rusted wreckage. The area is rough so do not take this as an invitation to descend the rugged terrain. Make sure you appreciate the wrecks from up above.>
Much of this coastline is called the Sunken City, for the remains of a neighborhood that were once pushed down into the sea by a landslide. The graffiti that adorns the ruins adds to the creepy coastal vibe of the area, and makes for an unforgettable sight. Ultimately, it’s best to think of it more from a legal point of view, since there is a lot of restriction, and potential legal issues with it. On weekend nights, the area has started to attract groups of people with beer, bonfires, and parties. That is exactly the kind of atmosphere that visitors should be warned about. Fires, cliffs, darkness, and restricted areas with hazardous ruins. There are many hazards to keep in mind. One of the easiest pleasures of Southern California is at a fish market restaurant near the Port of Los Angeles. Pick some fish, have it cooked, sit down by the water with a beer, and enjoy some live music. There’s not much to debate about that. Potato Chip Rock is a well known photo spot. The journey to the top takes about 3 hours on one side and about 50 minutes on the other. Regardless of the route, prepare for the hike. And please don't take a dangerous photo at the expense of trail safety. Topanga is more than just a shopping destination (though it is a great place for shopping). The mountains surrounding the area are equally beautiful, and provide a great escape from the city of Los Angeles for those who like to travel. Once you cross the mountains, you'll find Malibu's coastline on the other side. Cliff Point Park is a great view between Malibu and Santa Monica, especially if you're looking for a distant view of the Ferris wheel at the pier amusement park. The view of the coast is what makes it a great little stop. Angels Flight is a funicular that holds the title as the world's shortest railway. It's also a filming location for La La Land. It was out of service when I visited so please check its operating status before making a trip.
Bakersfield to Arvin
As most of you know, California is one of the largest producers of almonds and you will see expansive almond orchards along the drive between Bakersfield and Arvin. Almonds are often confused for almonds, but in the spring, their blossoms are similar to peach blossoms.
When the trees are blooming, the bright and delicate blossoms give the orchards an otherworldly beauty as it contrasts the surrounding farmlands.
In spring, the hills surrounding Arvin are covered in wildflowers, making this an especially beautiful seasonal drive.
Salton Sea Area
Salvation Mountain is a small and unique sight along the way. Its appeal lies in the fact that it has a lot of Christian imagery and handmade paint.
Near East Jesus it has a much stranger ambiance even during the day. One of my friends remarked that Salvation Mountain feels like heaven and East Jesus is like hell, and much like you’d expect, the differences between the two are stark.
There are also old abandoned settlements around the Salton Sea that may have houses and belongings that appear to be left behind. Please be respectful of the area, and avoid going inside any abandoned buildings.
Malibu Beaches
“Malibu Beach” is a name given to a number of beaches comprising around a dozen different stretches of coastline. The pier beach is the most popular amongst tourists but not necessarily the most rewarding. I personally think El Matador is the most beautiful beach and Malibu is highly recommended.
Lechuza Beach can also be accessed through a residential area and is more tranquil.
Please follow the rules for access, parking, and private property.Pirate Tower
This tower is located not on the main Laguna Beach waterfront, but positioned within another residential area of the city. It is a popular place for wedding photographers in the afternoons. While it's storybook silhouette is attractive, there is no reason to disturb the neighboring residents.
Angeles National Forest
In winter, this area is a ski destination and a lift is required to access the slopes. Weekend operations may occur in the summer as well and if the foothills are cloudy, the overcast will be above the clouds.
Dodger Stadium and Elysian Park
This is the location of one of the most recognizable posters of the Fast & Furious franchise. Even those who don't like the movies can enjoy the location for the view over the layered hills, roads, stadiums, and skyline of downtown Los Angeles.
Skid Row
One last practical tip for those exploring Downtown Los Angeles: be careful around Skid Row. The area is home to an unhoused population and social issues. It is not a place for tourists and should be approached with care and respect to those living there.
